Harris explodes for 30 points as men open season with 77-58 win over Salem State

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Acad.) scored a career-high 30 points tonight to lead the Judges men's basketball team past visiting Salem State University, 77-58, in the season opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis never trailed in this one, as Harris scored the first two buckets of the game from 3-point range. He also had a put-back dunk as the Judges opened on a 10-1 run.
  • Brandeis's lead extended to 19-3 with 11:19 on the clock before SSU got on track, but the Vikings were unable to contain Harris.
  • The Judges led 44-27 at the half, with Harris scoring 25 of his 30 points before the break, just two fewer than the entire Salem State team.
  • Though Harris was quieter in the second half, with only five points, he had three assists, two steals, and two blocks to stuff his stat sheet.
  • Brandeis led by as many as 25 points with 7:25 to go after a pair of Terrell Brown (Lowell, Mass./Proctor Academy) free throws made it 67-42.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris's 30 points came on 11-of-18 from the field, 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and 3-of-3 from the line.
  • He also finished with five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks, with the last three also representing career bests.
  • First-year guard Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Woodstock Acad.) came off the bench to score 10 points in his first collegiate game. He also had four steals.
  • Junior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) dished out a career-high nine assists, one more than the entire SSU roster.
  • Senior guard Darret Justice (Haymarket, Va. / Highland School) matched Harris for game-high honors with seven rebounds, tying a career-best.
  • In all, 10 of the 12 Judges who played tonight got into the scoring column, and nine players had rebounds.
  • Salem State's Juvens Louis led the visitors with 10 points off the bench, while forward Jarret Byrne had seven rebounds to equal Harris and Justice for game-high honors.
  • Jaden Castillo had two assists for the visitors.
  • Brandeis had 10 3-pointers to four for Salem State. The Judges also had 21 assists to just eight for the Vikings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The 30-point game was Brandeis's first since Tommy Eastman's 35-point performance against Emory last February 4.
  • Brandeis runs its all-time record against Salem State to 7-2, including the last five in a row.
