BRISTOL, R.I. - Senior guard Jessica Chapin
(Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) became the ninth player in
Brandeis University women's basketball history to score 1,000
career points today as she led the 14th-ranked Judges
past host Roger Williams University, 66-31, in a non-conference
contest.
Entering the game needing nine points to reach the plateau,
Chapin reached the plateau following a steal and lay-up with 7:11
left in the first half. She led all players with her nine points at
the half and ended the contest with a game-high 15 points on
five-of-12 shooting overall, including two-of-seven from the floor
and three-of-three from the line. Chapin also led all players with
five assists and tied for game-high honors with four steals, moving
into third on Brandeis's career steal list with 213, passing
Amy Sullivan '93. Chapin ended the contest with
1,006 career points.
No other Brandeis player scored in double figures, as 11
different Brandeis players got into the scoring column. Sophomore
guard Morgan Kendrew (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable)
led all other Brandeis scorers with eight points. Classmate
Brighid Courtney (Southampton, Mass./Northampton)
had her second-straight game with a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Judges (6-2) used stifling defense to earn the win and snap
a two-game losing streak. They held the Hawks without a field goal
for the first 11 minutes and 15 seconds of the contest as they
established a 17-2 lead. For the game, Brandeis held RWU to just
18.8 percent shooting (9-48) while forcing 28 turnovers and
converting them into 38 points.
Roger Williams (3-5) did not have any double-figure scorers,
with rookie guard Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa./Abington Heights)
leading the way with nine points. Rookie center Alexandria Lanieri
(Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) fell just short of game-high
honors with 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Brandeis is off until New Year's Eve, when they travel to Regis
College at 1 p.m., while Roger Williams hosts Connecticut College
Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
