WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior
Julia Liang of
Sugar Land, Texas, from the women’s volleyball team and senior
Eli Mones of
Portland, Oregon, and the men’s soccer team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 20. The Brandeis Athlete of the Week program is presented by The Chateau Restaurant and Jake N Joes Bar and Grill.
Liang served as the team’s lone primary setter against UMass Boston in a 3-1 win over the Beacons. She finished with 42 assists. It was just two shy of her career-best for any match and was her best in a four-setter. Liang helped the team hit .260 overall for the match, including .314 in the first set and .333 in the fourth. For her efforts, Liang was also named the University Athletic Association Defensive/Setter of the Week.
Liang is averaging 5.08 assists per set this season, having split time with two others for much of the season. This was her first match as the primary setter for the entire match. She ranked eighth in the UAA in assists per set.
With their win over UMB, Brandeis improved to 12-10 this season. They will face Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in their final home match of the season before taking on Emory and Rochester on Sunday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon in the final UAA matches of the regular season.
Mones scored a goal for the Brandeis men’s soccer team for the third UAA game in a row. With the Judges, trailing 2-1 in the 59
th minute at the University of Chicago, Mones beat a defender to the ball along the sideline. He caught the Chicago goalkeeper well off his line and fired the ball at the net to score from 40 yards out. The Judges would surrender a goal in the 77
th minute to fall to the Maroons, 3-2.
Mones is tied for the UAA lead in goals scored in conference games with three, while his two game-winners in league play lead the circuit.
The Judges continue UAA play this Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against Emory University. Brandeis is 6-4-2, while Emory is 5-6-1. Both teams come in to the game tied for third in the UAA with a 2-1 record, just one point out of first.
