WALTHAM, Mass. – First-year
Brooke Boehmer of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from the softball team and graduate student
Brian King of
Palos Verde, California, and the baseball team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 15.
Boehmer helped the Judges earn five wins in their eight games last week and on Monday. She went 7-for-18 at the plate (.389) with nine RBI and nine runs scored, belting two doubles and one home run. She also drew seven walks, giving her a .577 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage.
In Brandeis’s 9-8 win over University Athletic Association foe Emory on Friday, April 12, Boehmer recorded her first collegiate home run with two runners on as part of a four-run second inning. After the Eagles rallied to take an 8-4 lead in the top of the sixth, Boehmer and the Judges bounced back for four in the bottom of the frame, with Boehmer walking and scoring the tying run. After a scoreless seventh, Boehmer led off the eighth with a walk and scored the game-winning run. Boehmer also scored three runs in the team’s 12-7 loss in Game 3 of the series.
On Monday, April 15, the Judges concluded a suspended game against WPI, plus another full game with the Engineers. Boehmer delivered the game-winning three-run double in the first game as Brandeis won, 9-8, in eight innings. She then drew three walks, including one with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth that helped the Judges break the eight-run rule, 14-6.
Brandeis is 13-14 and 5-7 in the University Athletic Association. The Judges will meet #10-ranked Case Western Reserve for a four-game UAA starting on Friday.
King was one of the top offensive threats for the Judges despite an 0-5 week. He had six hits in 19 at-bats to hit .316 for the week. King drove in seven runs and scored four, with a home run, a double and three walks for a .435 on-base percentage and a .526 slugging percentage.
The Judges started the week with a 2-0 loss to top-ranked Endicott College. In a four-game series with UAA rivals NYU, the Judges and Violets put on some offensive fireworks, especially in game one, won by the visitors, 19-16, in 10 innings. King went 3-6 with five RBI and two runs scored in that contest. His three-run home run in the sixth inning helped spark a nine-run comeback as the Judges turned a 14-6 deficit into a 15-14 lead. It was his second homer of the year and the eighth of his career. Later in the game, he singled during the team’s six-run seventh, and walked in a run in the bottom of the 10
th after the Violets took the lead in the top of the inning.
Later in the series, King scored a run in 15-7 loss in Game 2 and had a two-run double in a 14-6 loss in Game 3.
Brandeis is 4-22 this season. The Judges step out of conference on April 17 for a game against Dean College before hosting Washington University in another four-game UAA set starting on April 19.
