WALTHAM, Mass. –  Sophomore TJ Carleo of the men’s indoor track and field team and junior epee Calla Lee of the women’s fencing team field team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 4, 2024. The award is presented weekly by the Chateau Restaurant Group.

Carleo, a native of Newburyport, Massachusetts,  had Brandeis men’s top performance at the 2024 Cupid Invitational. He placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.31, a mark that ranks 16th in all of Division III this season. A qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800 as a first-year. The top 20 individual qualifiers are selected to the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.
For his efforts, Carleo was also named the University Athletic Association Track Athlete of the Week.

The Brandeis Track and Field teams will compete this weekend at the Gordon Kelly Invitational at Harvard and the Valentine Invitational at Boston University.

Lee, of Duluth, Georgia, fenced in only one bout during one match last week, but it proved to be vital in the Judges’ 14-13 win over rival Wellesley. With the Judges leading, 13-11, headed into the final round of epee fencing, Lee came off the bench and defeated the Blue’s winningest fencer, 5-3, to clinch the team victory. It marked the fourth-straight time that Wellesley and Brandeis finished with a 14-13 score, and the third time the match was won by the Judges.

Lee has been a vital part of the team this season, fencing both in epee and sabre, picking up the latter when the Judges suffered an injury prior to their Northeast Fencing Conference matches. She has 21 wins total this season – 12 in sabre and nine in epee.

The Judges return to action this weekend when they travel to North Carolina for the Duke Invitational. The men compete on Saturday, February 10 and the women on Sunday, February 11.
