WALTHAM, Mass. -- First-year
Valerie Bunde of
Bloomington, Indiana, and graduate student
Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld of
Santiago, Chile, members of the women’s soccer and men’s soccer teams, have been named Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 25. The Brandeis Athlete of the Week program is presented by The Chateau Restaurant and Jake n JOES Sports Grille.
Bunde was instrumental in the Judges picking up their first University Athletic Association win of the season. In a 2-1 win at Case Western Reserve on Oct. 23, Bunde scored both Brandeis goals. She netted her second goal of the season in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1-1, then scored her third just over eight minutes later in the 73rd minute to give the Judges the victory. The goal was her second game-winner of the season, and it marked Brandeis’s first multi-goal game of the campaign.
For the season, Bunde’s three goals are tied for third on the team. She played in 12 of the team’s 15 games, starting 10 of them. After their win over CWRU, Brandeis dropped a 2-0 decision to #9 Carnegie Mellon, staying within one goal of the Tartans until the final minute of regulation.
The Judges (8-5-2, 1-3-1 UAA) return to action on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at home against #8 University of Chicago, in another UAA game.
Sanchez-Korenfeld scored the lone goal for the Brandeis men’s soccer team last week in a 1-1 draw at Carnegie Mellon on Oct. 25. His goal came in the 34th minute on a long throw-in from senior Maddox Yu that was headed across the box by first-year Jack Rossiter. The Judges led the Tartans until the 85th minute, having gone down to 10 men in the 80th. CMU’s pressure yielded a free kick that they converted for the equalizer. The Judges also dropped a 2-0 decision at #5 Case Western Reserve on Oct. 23 despite outshooting the Spartans, 14-11. Sanchez-Korenfeld had one shot in that game.
Overall this fall, Sanchez-Korenfeld is tied for third on the team with three goals, and is solo third with seven points. He has played nine games with three starts.
Brandeis (4-7-4, 1-3-1 UAA) is back in action on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against #9 University of Chicago in another UAA matchup.
