Mandy Reyes of
Manila, The Phillipines, members of the men’s and women’s tennis teams, have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb. 8. The Brandeis Athlete of the Week program is presented by The Chateau Restaurant and Jake n JOES Sports Grille.
Garbett had a pair of marathon wins for the #32 Judges in their 4-1 victory over Division I Holy Cross on Feb. 8. He helped clinch the doubles point at #2 with a 7-6 (12-10) win, teaming with sophomore Aidan Wang-Fan. At #2 singles, he outlasted his opponent, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, as each of the first three singles matches went three sets.
With the win, the Brandeis men evened their record at 1-1 this season, with both matches taking place against Division I opponents. The Judges return to action next week in California as part of their annual February Break trip. They will meet #4-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 15.
Reyes went 6-0 for the #23 Brandeis women in road wins over Smith and Wheaton (Mass.) on Feb. 7 and 8. In singles, she had the clinching win at #2 against Smith, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, then won 6-0, 6-2, at #1 against Wheaton. She teamed with Rebecca Suarez at #1 doubles for wins of 6-0 and 6-2 in the two matches. Brandeis defeated Smith, 6-1, and Wheaton, 7-0.
The Judges improved to 2-0 on the season. They will also be traveling to California next week for February break. The women will open their trip against Occidental College on Feb. 16.
This is the tenth year that the Brandeis Athlete of the Week program has been presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group. The Athlete of the Year Program highlights top Brandeis student-athletes who have had an outstanding athletic achievement in the week prior. Each selected student-athlete will be featured on the Brandeis athletics homepage and inside the Chateau Waltham and Jake n JOES.
