WALTHAM, Mass. -- Graduate student Shae Regan of Littleton, Massachusetts, from the women’s cross country team, and first-year Langston Byrd of Austin, Texas, and the men’s soccer team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 19. The Brandeis Athlete of the Week program is presented by The Chateau Restaurant and Jake n JOES Sports Grille.

Regan continued her excellent season for the Judges as the top performer on the women’s cross country team. Running at the competitive Connecticut College Invitational on Oct. 18, Regan was the team’s top performer for the third race in a row. She covered the six-kilometer course in 21:53.10, lowering her personal best by three seconds. After a slow start, Regan moved from 60th place to 49th after the second 2.6-kilometer split. She would go on to finish in 44th place overall. Unranked at the time, Brandeis finished in 13th place overall as a team, ahead of four top-30 squads in the previous United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III poll: #26 St. Olaf, #27 Coast Guard, #12 Amherst and #14 Washington and Lee. With their performance, the Brandeis women moved into the USTFCCCA rankings at #26, their first appearance since early in the 2023 season.

Brandeis returns to action on Saturday, November 1st, at the University Athletic Association championships in St. Louis at host Washington University.

Byrd made his first collegiate goal a big one, helping Brandeis men’s soccer win its first UAA game of the season on Oct. 18. Just 16 seconds after the Judges had equalized against the University of Rochester, Byrd pounced on a bad pass from the Yellowjackets. His initial shot on goal was saved, but he chipped the rebound into the open net, giving Brandeis a 2-1 road victory. With the win, the Judges improved to 9-1-3 on the season, 1-1-1 in the conference. They improved to #5 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25, their highest showing since 2018, when they were #4 in the preseason.

The Judges return to action with a pair of home games this weekend, taking on Case Westen Reserve on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. and Carnegie Mellon on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. in their final regular-season home game.

This is the tenth year that the Brandeis Athlete of the Week program has been presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group. The Athlete of the Year Program highlights top Brandeis student-athletes who have had an outstanding athletic achievement in the week prior.  Each selected student-athlete will be featured on the Brandeis athletics homepage and inside the Chateau Waltham and Jake n JOES
