WALTHAM, Mass. –  Junior Chloe Gonzalez of the women’s swimming and diving team and junior Mark Shamis of the men’s fencing team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 19, 2023. The award is presented weekly by the Chateau Restaurant Group.

Gonzalez, a native of Miami Beach, Florida, was a top performer for the Judges against some stiff competition, winning twice against #25 Coast Guard and #9 Tufts. Gonzalez won the 200-yard freestyle even in both meets, swimming 1:59.50 against USCGA to win by two seconds, and 1:58.15 over Tufts, by a margin of just 0.07 seconds. Gonzalez was also second in the 100-yard butterfly against Coast Guard and third in the 50 free against Tufts. Her times in all four events were the fastest on the Judges this season and marked personal bests.

The Judges return to action on December 1st through 3rd at the Gompei Invitational at WPI.

Shamis, of San Jose, California, fenced epee for the Brandeis men over nine matches last week. He was the only Brandeis fencer to earn a win in all nine, posting winning records for the Judges against Boston College, Brown, Vassar and Wagner. Shamis currently leads the Brandeis men with 25 overall victories this season.

The Judges are back in action on Sunday, December 3, when they host their annual Brandeis Invitational with matches against Drew, Lawrence, St. John’s, Yeshiva, Yale and Cornell.

This is the eighth year that the Brandeis Athlete of the Week program has been presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group. The Athlete of the Year Program highlights a top Brandeis student-athlete who has had an outstanding athletic achievement from the week prior.  Each selected student-athlete will be featured on the Brandeis athletics homepage and inside the Chateau Waltham and Jake N Joes

Owned and operated by the Nocera Family, the Chateau Restaurant of Waltham opened in 1933 and set the standard for providing the tradition of Italian family dining, friendly service and quality food at reasonable prices for its customers.  Located on 195 School Street, with 900 seats, the Chateau is always ready to accommodate large parties.

The Nocera Family consists of 6 brothers who have always had a passion for playing sports.  In 2010, The Nocera Family launched a new concept, Jake n JOES Sports Grille.  Jake n JOES Waltham opened in 2014 and is the best place to watch a game and enjoy quality food.

"Brandeis student-athletes are fantastic role models in our community,” says Chateau President Joe Nocera, “They exemplify the ideals of excellence and commitment both on and off the playing field. The Chateau Waltham and Jake n JOES Waltham are proud to partner with Brandeis Athletics to continue to enhance a positive focus within the Waltham Community."
