WALTHAM, Mass. –  Senior softball player Haley Nash of Delmar, New York, and graduate student Jake Freed of Vernon Hills, Illinois, and the baseball team have been named the Brandeis University Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 18.
 
Nash helped the Brandeis softball team sweep Wentworth, 4-0 and 11-3, in the Judges’ New England opener on March 17. Nash went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with five RBI, two runs scored, a double and two home runs. She also drew two walks, reaching base in five of her eight plate appearances.
 
Nash is currently batting .545 for the Judges with a .621 on-base percentage and 1.182 slugging percentage. She has two doubles, four home runs and nine RBI in eight games played. Nash’s two home runs last week gave her 23 for her career, tying her for fourth on the Judges’ all-time list.
 
After getting swept by #17-ranked MIT in a doubleheader yesterday, the Judges are 3-5 on the season. The will host WPI on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in their first home games of the campaign.
 
Freed was the hitting start for Brandeis in a 1-4 week. He hit safely in four of five games and scored a run in three of them. Overall, he batted 7-of-19 (.368) with five runs scored, four RBI, three doubles and two home runs. Freed went deep in back-to-back games against Eastern Nazarene on March 12 and MIT on March 14.
 
The hot streak helped Freed raise his batting average nearly 50 points to .310 on the season, tops on the team. He also leads the squad in slugging percentage (.524) and runs scored (9) and ranks second in on-base percentage (.383) and RBI (7).
 
Brandeis is 4-7 on the season heading into a game against Wentworth on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
 
This is the eighth year that the Brandeis Athlete of the Week program has been presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group. The Athlete of the Year Program highlights a top Brandeis student-athlete who has had an outstanding athletic achievement from the week prior.  Each selected student-athlete will be featured on the Brandeis athletics homepage and inside the Chateau Waltham and Jake N Joes
