ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis women's tennis team couldn't overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play, as the 20th-ranked Judges fell to No. 11 Washington University, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the University Athletic Association tournament. Brandeis, the fifth seed, will face eighth-seeded NYU tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the consolation bracket.

Washington edged Brandeis in two of the three doubles matches. After an 8-4 win at No. 2 for the Bears, they earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 before capturing one of the toughest matches of the day at No. 1. The tandem of Kate Klein and Corinne Rauck pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) tiebreaker win over the Judges' Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Faith Broderick (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville).

Brandeis rallied in singles action, winning at the top four spots. Broderick was able to avenge her doubles loss with a quick 6-4, 6-0 win over Klein at No. 2 singles. Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) made relatively quick work of her opponent at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, while rookie Simone Vandroff (Moss Beach, Calif./Half Moon Bay) rallied from her doubles defeat for a 7-5, 6-2 win at fifth singles. Unfortunately, Brandeis lost at No. 5 and 6 singles before Cooke could complete her marathon victory at No. 1, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 10-8 in the third-set super-tiebreaker.
