Mandel, Sharahy named UAA Fencers of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior Adam Mandel of White Plains, N.Y., and rookie Annabel Sharahy of Wayne, N.J., have been selected as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for men's and women's fencing for the week ending Nov. 4. Mandel and Sharahy earned two of the Judges' five medals at the New England Collegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational, a tournament more commonly known as "The Big One."

Mandel, a saberist who earned All-American honors last season, won the gold medal in his event. Mandel went 6-0 in pool play and was seeded second in the elimination bracket. He eliminated teammate Jess Ochs-Willard (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Acad.) in the quarterfinals, 15-9, then edged Brown's Alex Palabrica, 15-14, in the semis before taking out Sacred Heart's Tom Gerrity in the finals, 15-6. Mandel had won the silver medal at The Big One each of the last two seasons.

This is Mandel's ninth career UAA Athlete of the Week honor. He finished 12th in men's sabre at the 2013 NCAA Fencing Championships in San Antonio.

Sharahy was Brandeis' top rookie performer, earning a bronze medal in women's sabre. Sharahy won her pool, 6-0, outscoring her opponents, 30-6, to earn the third seed in the direct elimination. She continued her domination in the tournament, outscoring her first three opponents – including classmate Jaclyn Hammond (Bernardsville, N.J./St. Gills Bernard) – by a combined score of 45-7. Sharahy knocked off Brown's Lauren Altman, 15-10, to earn a medal, before falling to another Brown fencer, eventual champion Caitlin Taylor, 15-13, in the semifinals.

Brandeis seems poised for another excellent season under head coach Bill Shipman. The Judges are coming off of a season in which both the men's and women's fencing teams were New England champions, and Brandeis returns all three of its fencers that qualified for last season's NCAA Championships. The men's and women's squads had a total of 12 quarterfinalists at The Big One this year.

Mandel is a 2011 graduate of The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. He is the son of Drs. Eric and Karen Mandel, White Plains, N.Y.

Sharahy is a 2013 graduate of Newark Academy, Newark, N.J. She is the daughter of Norris and Tatiana Sharahy, Wayne, N.J.
