CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's fencing team went 3-3 over the weekend at the 2013 Eric Sollee Invitational at MIT. The Judges posted wins over UAA rival NYU (15-12), Haverford (17-10) and Yeshiva (24-3), while falling to #10 Pennsylvania (7-20), Duke (7-20) and Stevens Tech (11-16). The Judges are 15-9 overall this season.
In their always competitive meet with NYU, the Judges and Violets split 5-4 decisions, with Brandeis taking the sabre and NYU the epee. Seniors Emmily Smith (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward-Melville) and Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) picked up wins in the final rotation to give the sabre squad the victory. That enabled the foil squad to win their last three bouts and clinch the win, with rookie Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Acad.) going 3-0.
Mattos led the foil squad to the team's best record at the meet, winning four of their six matchups, defeating Stevens in addition to wins in the three Brandeis victories. Mattos tied for the Judges' top individual record, going 11-4 and improving to 63-12 overall this season. Rookies Emilia Dwyer (New York, N.Y. / Hunter H.S.) and Annette Kim (Morganville, N.J. / Freehold) also won nine bouts on the afternoon.
Messinger and the sabre squad had some of the toughest matchups of the meet, with five of their six matches decided by 5-4 scores. In addition to their 8-1 win over Yeshiva, the Judges defeated NYU and Haverford, while putting up the best performances against Duke and Penn in losses. Messinger matched Mattos at 11-4 overall, while Smith also had nine wins.
The epee squad earned wins over Yeshiva (7-2) and Haverford (5-4), while falling to NYU (4-5), Stevens (1-8) and Duke (9-0). A young squad, their top winners were all freshmen. Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills) and Rosa Zhang (E. Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) each had five wins, while Sonya Glickman (Valhalla, N.Y. / Valhalla) and Alexis Gremillion (Houston, Texas / Awty International) had four apiece.
