Women's fencing downs Wellesley, 20-7
With the win, the Judges improve to 8-4 on the season, while Wellesley falls to 3-9.
In the closest weapon competition of the evening, the Judges came away with a 5-4 win in epee. The match went back and forth through the early goings, and was tied at 3-3 with three bouts to go. Brandeis then pulled away, winning the two of the final three matches to seal the win. Kristen Ha (Bronx, N.Y. / Riverdale CS)picked up two wins for the Judges, while Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills), Alexis Gremillion (Houston, Texas / Awty International) and Rosa Zhang (E. Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) each added wins. For Wellesley, Charlotte Treadwell won twice, while Courtney Collins and Katherine Ledbetter each added victories.
In foil, Brandeis won the first six matches, cruising to the 8-1 victory. Rookies Emilia Dwyer (New York, N.Y. / Hunter H.S.) and Annette Kim (Morganville, N.J. / Freehold) each went 3-0 for the Judges, while Eva Ahmad (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn Tech) picked up the other two wins. Wellesley's lone victory came from Camille Samulski.
In the sabre competition, Wellesley was overmatched, with only two eligible fencers in the weapon. Brandeis picked up the first eight victories, including three by forfeit, nabbing the 8-1 win. Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) and Deborah Abiri (Old Westbury, N.Y. / North Shore) were credited with three wins each to lead the Judges, while Emmily Smith (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward-Melville) finished 2-0. Wellesley's win came from Dania Wright in the final contested bout.
Brandeis is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Brown University for Northeast Fencing Conference action. Wellesley will also fence this weekend, hosting the 2013 Wellesley Invitational on Sunday.
