Softball's sensational season comes to an end with 4-1 loss to Coast Guard
The Brandeis softball team's tremendous season came to a close in an elimination game in the NCAA tournament at Wellesley College, as the Judges dropped a 4-1 decision to Coast Guard. The Judges seniors depart with 118 career wins, four post-season tournaments, including an ECAC crown and their first NCAA berth.

Eastern Conn. sends Judges to losers' bracket, 7-0
For the second time this season, the Brandeis softball team had trouble with Eastern Connecticut State University's Molly Rathbun, as the Judges fell to the Warriors' ace, 7-0, in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Tournament regional. The Judges had just one hit and will face Coast Guard tomorrow at noon in an elimination game.

Five from softball team named All-New England
The Brandeis softball team, currently 28-7-1 and in the midst of their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, has placed five members on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-New England region team. Sophomores Brittany Grimm and Marianne Specker were first-team selections and are eligible for All-America honors, while Emily Vaillette and Stacy Berg are on the second team and Melisa Cagar on the third team, her third All-New England selection.

Cagar heroics lift softball past Coast Guard, 7-6, in NCAA tournament
Junior 2B Melisa Cagar ripped a two-run single through the right side on an 0-2 count with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning and sophomore Caroline Miller retired the side in the top of the seventh as the second-seeded Brandeis softball team rallied to defeat No. 3 Coast Guard, 7-6, in the NCAA tournament. The Judges take on Eastern Connecticut tomorrow at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Vaillette hurls #18 softball to first-ever NCAA win, 8-0, over Endicott
Senior Emily Vaillette tossed a two-hit shutout, her school-record 10th of her career, as the Brandeis softball team defeated Endicott College, 8-0, in five innings in their first-ever NCAA tournament game. The Judges pounded out 11 hits and will face Coast Guard tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Softball selected to NCAA Division III tournament! UPDATE: WBRS to broadcast opener
Following the most successful regular season in school history, the Brandeis University softball team has earned first-ever NCAA Division III tournament berth. The second-seeded Judges, ranked 17th in the nation in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll, will play at Wellesley College, where they will take on seventh-seeded Endicott College on Thursday, May 13, in their first game at 4 p.m.

Specker, Grimm named to the Academic All-District softball team
Sophomores Marianne Specker and Brittany Grimm have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Softball team as outfielders, as selected by CoSIDA. Specker was a second-team All-District selection, while Grimm was named to the third team.

Chu, Specker earn UAA Player of the Week honors, May 4
A pair of sophomores, Jon Chu of the baseball team and Marianne Specker of the softball squad, were selected as the University Athletic Association Hitters of the Week for the week ending May 2. Chu hit .476 with seven RBI as the baseball team went 2-3, while Specker was .647 with 10 RBI in a 5-1 week.

Five earn softball All-UAA honors, Johnson and Dubay named Coaching Staff of the Year
Five Brandeis softball players were named to the 2010 All-University Athletic Association team today, while head coach Jessica Johnson (left) and assistant coach Melissa Dubay were named the Coaching Staff of the Year. Junior Melisa Cagar, sophomore Brittany Grimm and senior Emily Vaillette were first-team selections, while rookie Stacy Berg and senior Erin Ross were second-team members.

#18 softball splits with Framingham State
On senior day for the Brandeis softball team, the Judges defeated Framingham State College, 9-1, behind an Emily Vaillette three-hitter in the opener of a doubleheader. The Judge bats couldn't get a timely hit against the Rams in game two, as they fell, 4-1. Ranked second in New England and 18th nationally, the Judges will await word on their postseason fate on May 10.

#18 softball sweeps Emerson, 9-1 and 11-3
The Brandeis bats pounded out 24 hits, 13 going for extra bases today, as the 18th-ranked Judges defeated Emerson College, 9-1 and 11-3 in a pair of mercy-rule shortened games. Senior catcher/DP Erin Ross led the way for the Judges, going 5-for-7 with three doubles.

#18 softball sweeps RIC, 9-3 and 6-5, in Providence
In their final regularly-scheduled road games of the season, the Brandeis softball team avenged a pair of losses from a year ago with a sweep of Rhode Island College, 9-3 and 6-5. Senior hurler Emily Vaillette earned a win and a save, while junior Danielle Lavallee wielded the big bat in game one and sophomore Marianne Specker did the damage in game two.

Brandeis spring schedule updates: April 26
UPDATE, April 26: Because of opponent scheduling conflicts, the baseball doubleheader at Trinity that was rained out on Sunday will not be made up. In addition, because of postponements with the NEWMAC softball tournament, Tuesday's Brandeis-Babson doubleheader will also be canceled, with no make-up date. The softball team will instead host Framingham State on Sunday, May 2 at noon.

#14 softball falls to #19 Eastern Conn, 3-2, in tight contest
Junior 2B Melisa Cagar hit her fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome a fine all-around performance from Eastern Connecticut State's Molly Rathbun, who drove in all three runs and struck out 13 batters as the #19 Warriors knocked off the #14 Judges, 3-2. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called because of darkness.

Berg named UAA Hitter of the Week as Judges climb to No. 14 in national poll
Rookie catcher/designated player Stacy Berg has been named the UAA Softball Hitter of the Week. The third Judge to earn that honor this season, Berg leads the 14th-ranked Judges into action on Thursday against No. 19 Eastern Connecticut State at 4 p.m. in the first-ever meeting of two nationally-ranked teams on Marcus Field.

Huge innings carry #20 softball past Wesleyan, 8-0 and 17-4
Two huge innings lifted the 20th-ranked Brandeis softball team past host Wesleyan University today. The Judges scored six in the seventh to close out game one, 8-0, and then plated 13 runs in the first inning of game two en route to a 17-4 win. The Judges batted around twice in the first inning, with the first nine batters reaching before an out was made.

Behind the big bat of rookie catcher/DP Stacy Berg, the 20th-ranked Brandeis University softball team swept visiting Wheaton College, 9-1 and 11-4, to reach the 20-win plateau for the season. Berg reached base in all eight plate appearances in the twinbill, going 5-for-5 with three walks, two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored.

Three Brandeis student-athletes have received recent University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors. Junior Rachel Rosman was honored for women's tennis for April 5, while senior Chelsea Korp and junior Charles Sacks were recognized for softball and golf, respectively, on April 12.

No. 21 softball splits with Bowdoin, 6-3 & 0-2, halting 12-game unbeaten streak
Brandeis junior 2B Melisa Cagar drive in three runs to lead the 21st-ranked Judges to victory in the opener of a doubleheader with host Bowdoin College, 6-3. In game two, the Polar Bears blanked the Judges for only the second time this season, 2-0, to earn a split and snap a 12-game Brandeis unbeaten streak.

Senior Emily Vaillette and sophomore Caroline Miller each tossed seven scoreless innings of work today as the Judges defeated Clark, 7-2 and 4-0. The hurlers struck out 10 each while allowing 10 hits between them, as Brandeis improved to 10-0-1 in their last 11 games.

Berg, Kelley lead No. 21 softball team to sweep of WPI
Behind five hits and seven RBI from rookie Stacy Berg and five RBI - including two walk-off hits - by junior Courtney Kelley, the 21st-ranked Brandeis softball team swept a doubleheader from WPI, 10-1 and 12-4. With the wins, the Judges are now unbeaten in their last nine contests.

Grimm named UAA, NEISCA Hitter of the Week, March 30
Sophomore outfielder Brittany Grimm earned University Athletic Association and New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association Hitter of the Week honors for March 30 after leading the 20th-ranked Judges to five wins and a tie in six contests. She hit .591 with five doubles, two triples and two home runs for a 1.273 slugging percentage on the week.

The Brandeis softball team got a two-hit shutout from senior Emily Vaillette in the opener and 5.1 innings of fine relief from sophomore Caroline Miller in the second game as the 20th-ranked Judges defeated Salem State, 7-0 and 10-5, in their first two true road games of the season.

Sophomore outfielder Brittany Grimm continued her hot hitting with four doubles in seven at-bats today as the Brandeis softball team, ranked No. 20 in the nation, faced Lasell in a doubleheader. The Judges won game one, 9-6, before darkness called an end to game two with the scored tied, 2-2.

On the strength of a pair of wins over another nationally-ranked UAA squad, the Brandeis softball team earned their first-ever national ranking from the NFCA. The Judges, who were 14th in the most recent poll, placed three players - senior pitcher Emily Vaillette, junior 2B Melisa Cagar and sophomore 3B Brittany Grimm - on the UAA All-Tournament team.

The Brandeis softball team, ranked No. 14 in the nation in Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, split a doubleheader with Wellesley College in their first-ever games as a ranked team. The Judges fell, 9-7, in the opener, but bounced back to win, 6-3, in the nightcap.

Brandeis softball goes 5-3 to finish second in UAA, best since 1999
After getting two straight days of games washed out because of rain, the Brandeis softball team finished the UAA schedule with a record of 5-3. Thanks to the pitching of senior Emily Vaillette (3-2, 1 SV, 0.66 ERA) and the hitting of sophomore Brittany Grimm (.400 BA, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI), the Judges placed second in the conference, their best finish since 1999.

Softball blanks Rochester, 8-0, and Case, 11-0
The Brandeis softball team posted their highest UAA win total since 2003 with four games still to play today, as the Judges defeated Rochester, 8-0, and Case, 11-0, to move to 3-1 in the conference. Junior 2B Melisa Cagar went 3-4 with three runs and four SB in the opener, while rookie DH Stacey Berg was 3-4 with five RBI, a double and a homer in game two.

Softball hands No. 7 WashU 9-6 loss in UAA tournament
The Brandeis softball team dropped its UAA opener, 3-1, to Emory, but the Judges bounced back to hand seventh-ranked Washington University a 9-6 loss, their first of the season. The Bears are the defending UAA champions. Melisa Cagar and Brittany Grimm each went deep in the win over WashU, while rookie Stacy Berg homered vs. Emory.
