Men's soccer to welcome eight newcomers among Class of 2018

The Brandeis University men's soccer program is pleased to welcome eight members of the Class of 2018 to the program! These eight players will take the field in head coach Mike Coven's 42nd season on the sidelines. The Judges have been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament in each of the past two seasons. 

"It is a class that we feel has the technical and athletic ability to continue to push Brandeis soccer forward, and we are very excited to watch this group perform and develop during their time here," Coven said. The newest members of the Judges are

 

 

 


Marcello Brociner - M - Somerville, Mass. - Somerville H.S.

* Three-year starter at Somerville High school, co-captain of the team his senior year. 

* Somerville won North Sectional Championships in his junior and senior

* Reached the State Finals in his senior season.

 Coach Coven on Marcello: "Marcello is a technical player with great speed coming down the wing.  He will look to help our attack with his pace and one vs one ability."

Marino Espiga - F - Winchester, Mass. - Winchester H.S.

* Three-year varsity starter at Winchester High School. 

* Named All-State his senior year, finishing with 22 goals and 8 assists. 

* Played Club Soccer for FC Blazers and Scorpions.

Coach Coven on Marino: "Marino is a very talented left-footed attacking player who we are very excited to have joining the Brandeis front line next season"

Patrick Flahive - M - Glenwood, Ill. - Glenwood H.S./Worcester (Mass.) Academy

* Center-midfielder for 2013 Worcester Academy NEPSAC Class A Runners-up

* Four-year member of the Glenwood High School varsity team in Illinois

* Named Illinois All-Region in 2011 and 2012 

Coach Coven on Patrick:  "Patrick is an athletic and versatile player who can play a number of positions and will look to make an immediate impact come this fall".

Christian Hernandez  - M - Revere, Mass. - Lawrence Academy

* Three-year team captain at Lawrence Academy

* Led Lawrence to the Independent School League title and NEPSAC Class B runner-up in 2013

* Two-time All ISL performer, 2013 New England All-Star

* Played Club Soccer for the USSFDA FC Greater Boston Bolts

Coach Coven on Christian: "Christian is a very physical and aggressive player whose leadership qualities will be felt immediately when he steps on campus in Waltham"

Berra Ibas - M - Ludlow, Mass. - Ludlow H.S.

* Three-year starter at Ludlow High School.

Coach Coven on Berra:  "Berra is coming out of one of the top high school programs in the State and is a true two-way center mifielder."

 

Brandon Miskin - M - Needham, Mass. - Needham H.S./Worcester Academy

* Spent 2013 as a post-graduate at Worcester Academy starting in Center Midfield

* Led Worcester to the NEPSAC Class A Championship game

* Prior to Worcester, Brandon helped guide Needham High school to a State Championship as a senior.

* Played Club Soccer for FC Bolts and MPS.

Coach Coven on Brandon: "Brandon took a PG year in 2013 at Worcester Academy after captaining Needham High School to a State Championship in 2012. He has the technical and tactical ability to contribute to our midfield play immediately."

Bernardo Ponte - M - Cambridge, Mass. - Cambridge Rindge and Latin

* Three-year varsity starter at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.

* Played club soccer for FC Blazers and MPS

 Coach Coven on Bernardo: "Bernardo graduated in 2013 and took a gap year this past year.  He has the technical ability and soccer smarts to fit right in with our style of play and  to make an impact during his career for the Judges."

Benjamin Woodhouse - GK - Suffield, Conn./Suffield H.S.

* Three-year starter at Suffield High School

* Finished career with a 58-2 high school record and consecutive Connecticut State Championships.

* Finished high school career with a 0.15 GAA

* Named Connecticut All-State in 2013

 Coach Coven on Ben: "Ben is a great shot-stopper with very good athleticism and instincts.  Ben's winning pedigree and work ethic will help him fit in perfectly with Brandeis Soccer."
