WALTHAM, Mass. – Men’s basketball sophomore Collin Sawyer of New London, Connecticut, has been named the January 10 Brandeis Athlete of the Week, presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group. This is the first Brandeis Athlete of the Week award of 2018.
Sawyer has helped the Judges go 2-2 since December 31 thanks to some hot and timely 3-point shooting. He has averaged 13.5 points per game over that span, hitting just under four 3-pointers per contest. Sawyer has hit 52.9 percent from the field (18-34) and 57.7 percent from 3-point range (15-26).
Sawyer’s hot stretch started with a 12-point performance against Bates College on December 31st that included a game-winning, buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the Judges’ 76-73 win. Sawyer was able to get off the winning bucket in seven-tenths of a second off an in-bound play. On Jan. 3 against Fitchburg State, Sawyer netted a career-high 17 points in a 73-70 victory. He tied for team-high honors with 14 points in Brandeis’s 90-82 loss at NYU on Jan. 6, the team’s University Athletic Association (UAA) opener, and added 12 points in a Jan. 8 defeat at the hands of Amherst.
For the season, Sawyer is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per game, while his 27 3-pointers on second on the squad, as is his 39.7 percent 3-point percentage.
Brandeis is led by head coach Brian Meehan, who is in his 15th season with the Judges. Brandeis is 4-8 this year, 0-1 in the UAA. The Judges head to St. Louis and Chicago this weekend to meet Washington University on Friday night at 9 p.m. (8 Central) and the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at 12 noon (11 a.m. Central).

The Athlete of the Year Program highlights a top Brandeis student-athlete who has had an outstanding athletic achievement from the week prior.
