WALTHAM, Mass. – Men’s tennis senior Brian Granoff of Miami, Florida, has been named the April 26 Brandeis Athlete of the Week, presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group.
Granoff had an outstanding week for the #34 Judges, going 7-1 in singles and doubles as the Judges defeated three nationally-ranked opponents in their four matches. Brandeis started the week on April 18 with a 7-2 win at #22 MIT in a non-conference match, with Granoff supplying wins at No. 2 singles (6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-0) and No. 3 doubles (8-4), along with sophomore partner Jackson Kogan.
At the 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship tournament in Altamonte Springs, Florida, Granoff earned one of the Judges’ three points in a 6-3 loss to #6 Washington University in the quarterfinals, defeating the Bears’ John Carswell, 6-1, 6-1, on Friday morning. In the consolation semifinals on Saturday afternoon, Granoff won 8-4 in doubles to complete a sweep of #31 NYU, then took a 6-0, 6-2, decision in singles as Brandeis avenged a regular-season loss to the Violets.
Finally, Granoff helped the Judges knock off #12 Case Western Reserve, 5-4, in the UAA fifth-place match on Sunday morning with an 8-5 win in doubles and a 6-2, 6-2, win in singles. With the win, the Judges reached 12 wins for the season, their most since 2006-07, while their fifth-place finish at UAAs was their highest since 2010.
Brandeis will close out the regular season on Friday afternoon with a match against Tuft University on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
