WALTHAM, Mass. – Men’s soccer senior Josh Ocel of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, has been named the November 15 Brandeis Athlete of the Week, presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group.
Ocel, a midfielder and the leading scorer for the Brandeis men’s soccer team, registered two assists in two Judge NCAA Tournament wins. He delivered a free kick on to the head of sophomore Dylan Hennessy in the 65th minute of a 3-0 win over Western Connecticut State University in the first round, while his corner kick led to Mike Lynch’s game-winner in the 67th minute of a 1-0 win over Rutgers-Newark in the second round. With the two assists, Ocel tied Brandeis’s career record with 44 helpers, tying a record that has stood for more than 40 years, held by Rob Muller ’77. He also became the 12th player in school history with 80 career points, tying Greg Allen ’86 for 11th on the all-time points list. Allen’s son Andrew Allen is a junior on the current team.
With their two wins last weekend, Brandeis men’s soccer advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament Sweet 16 for the sixth year in a row. The Judges, ranked 19th nationally by D3soccer.com and 20th by the United Soccer Coaches, improved to 15-4. They will meet undefeated Drew University (21-0-1), ranked 10th by D3soccer.com and 12th by the United Soccer coaches, in the third round on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Tufts University.
